How to Get a Tax ID Number or EIN 1-2-3
How to Apply for a Tax ID Number:
In the USA, businesses get Federal Tax ID Numbers from the IRS. You can apply either online, by phone, by
fax or by mail. If you apply online, you can receive your Tax ID (also known as an EIN or Employer
Identification Number) immediately.
Does Your Business Need a Tax ID Number (EIN)?
Some businesses require a Tax ID Number while others do not. The IRS has a series of questions that they ask to determine whether or not your business needs to get
a Tax ID Number. These questions include:
- Does your company have employees?
- Is your business a corporation or a partnership?
- Do you file tax returns for any of these items: Employment, Excise, Alcohol, Tobacco or Firearms?
- Do you withhold taxes on income, other than wages, paid to a non-resident alien?
- Do you have a Keogh plan?
- Are you involved with any of theses types of organizations: see website
If the structure of your company changes (for example from a sole proprietor to a partnership or
corporation), or its changes ownership, the owner typically needs to get a new EIN. If your business changes
names, locations or you operate multiple businesses, generally a new Employer Identification Number is not
required.
If you still have questions, the IRS is th best place to contact. you can reach them by phone at
1-800-829-4933, or you can contact your local taxpayer office using the office locator.
The Tax ID Number given to you is your permanent number and can be used for when you open a business bank
account, apply for a business license or file your company's tax return
How to Get a State Tax ID Number
(and Do You Need One?)
A State ID Number is separate from a Federal ID Number, and it is issued by the state in which you do
business.
Generally, businesses that hire employees, sell tangible goods or are formed as corporations need to get a
State Identification Number. You will need this number when you pay business taxes, employment taxes or sales
tax.
