Recession-Proof Laundry Business?
I was recently on vacation in Portland, Oregon. Our hotel did not offer laundry
facilities, so we ended up going to the neighborhood laundromat.
The building was quiet and clean, in fact no one was there. I opened up my laptop and started working while
I waited for my clothes to wash. Shortly after, a nicely dressed man walked in. He seemed in a good mood, and
we chatted briefly before he made the rounds, emptying coins out of the washers and dryers.
Lots of coins.
He couldn't have been there 20 minutes before he said goodbye and left. It didn't seem like a bad workday to
me, and it seemed like he was enjoying it.
Obviously, laundromat owners work more than 20 minutes a day, but it made me think how a well-located
coin-op laundry business could bring in a lot of coin, without the burdensome work schedule. Even in a
recession - I mean, people still wash their clothes, don't they?
