How to Conduct a Workshop 1-2-3
By conducting a no-cost workshop, you can effectively let the public know about your business or
advertise your products and/or services without spending a lot of advertising dollars.
Workshop events can be especially effective when you have an attractive personality. If you work personally
with customers in your business (like a hair stylist, consultant, etc), live events can be a great way to let
prospects meet you and see what you're all about. You don't have to worry about being a salesperson, because
instead of selling, you are informing and educating your market in a no-pressure way.
Do you want to be known as an expert in your line of work? If you deliver valuable information, and people
enjoy your workshop, you will become that "go-to" person that people want to do business with. And don't forget
their referrals!
Workshop events can be very inexpensive to put on - and many times free. A nice benefit is that several
organizations are consistently on the lookout for speakers for their group meetings. They can provide a group
of qualified prospects - without you having to do the work of recruiting an audience.
If speaking in front of a large group scares you, work with a smaller group like a workshop that is
activity-oriented. You become less the center of attention. The event can be brief and effective at the same
time. Sometimes people don't have time for longer workshops, so you may attract a larger audience with a
shorter event.
There are 3 main steps when it comes to conducting a workshop:
- Decide on a workshop topic. Popular ideas offer solutions to common problems that your specific market
has. Consider issues like helping your prospects save time and money, or discuss "do-it-yourself" tips.
Outline an agenda for your workshop. Will it be a speaking engagement or will there be multiple activities
involved? What materials, equipment or supplies will be needed?
- What about location? Can you hold the event in your place of business or will you need to rent space?
Or maybe you are presenting to a group that has space available? You also may be able to use a park,
community center or library for free.
Pick a convenient, comfortable spot, and you are more likely to get more people to attend your workshop.
You also want them to have a pleasurable experience while they are there. Remember factors like bathrooms
and parking.
- Advertise your event with a press release. Let the newspapers and your
local city do some of the marketing for you. If the workshop is not for a private group, contact
organization leaders to let them know about the activity. Give them brochures or a letter with
information about your background and a flyer with particulars on the workshop.
Brochures, business cards and additional company information is good to have on hand to offer to any
attendees. If applicable, you may want to give out samples or print coupons to encourage people to try out your
products or services.
