How to Start a Cupcake Business 1-2-3

There are so many avenues you can take when starting a cupcake business. Gourmet cupcake shops are opening up in every major city and are quickly becoming a popular treat.

But what about baby shower cupcakes, wedding cupcakes, children's birthday cupcakes and cupcake bouquets? You guessed it - pretty much any event that would have a cake or cookies would surely enjoy cupcakes too.

There is also a growing market for gluten-free products, organic baked goods and healthier desserts. With a cupcake business, you can start small, from your kitchen or other baking establishment. You can make deliveries to customers or sell to retail stores or markets. As your business grows, and if you choose, you can open a cupcake shop and sell your cupcakes direct to customers.

The permits and licenses you'll need will depend on the city, county and state your business operates. Each state has its own requirements. Your cooking space will be required to pass an inspection by the Department of Health. Upon approval, they will license you. You may also be required to maintain a standard recipe for product labeling purposes.

Marketing Your Cupcake Business

Get Free Publicity
Besides advertising in your local yellow pages and placing ads in newspapers and neighborhood mailers, you can save money by writing a brief press release or "letter" to your local paper announcing the opening of your cupcake company.

Offer a special discount or free offer for first-time customers, and publications will find this more newsworthy. This means that they're more likely to publish news about your company. Include a photo of previous work you have done to demonstrate your skills and entice new customers to try out your service. Your press release doesn't have to be long, and you can find press release samples here: How to Get Free Press.

Local Search for Cupcake Businesses
More and more people are looking for local businesses online (instead of the traditional yellow pages) - and you don't want to miss these valuable customers. Local Search sources that are affordable and receive substantial traffic include: Google Local, Yelp, Super Pages and more specialized sites Urban Spoon and Insider Pages.

Want people to find your website in the search engines? Get listed in 20 search engines for free or in 300 search engines for $4.

Advertise with Signs
Use a car magnet to advertise your business while you are on the road, a yard sign to announce a sale or a banner to promote your store's grand opening. You can design and create your own signs cheaply online using SignsBannersDecals.com.

Groupon
This is a popular online coupon marketing tool that doesn't cost lots of money. Get a ton of new prospects fast (in 24 hours) through at site called Groupon. No up-front marketing costs!
