How to Register a Website Domain Name

If you are setting up a website, you will need a domain name, or URL (www.blahblah.com). To get a domain name, you need to find an available URL and register it with one of the many domain registrars on the internet.

Probably the most popular domain registrar is GoDaddy.com. They offer low prices on domains, and they make it easy to register your domain name. See Cheap Domain Names

They can help you find out which names are still available and give you ideas for possible domain names that you might be interested in. They also provide services like website hosting, email, shopping carts and SSL encryption. Packaged together, users get a discount.

1. Use the search box on the GoDaddy.com website to type in the domain that you'd like to register. They will tell you if it is still available. If the name has already been taken, they will make suggestions of possible domain names you might like, based on the information you entered.

2. Once you have found an available domain name, click "continue to registration" where will you fill out your ownership information for the domain. You will also receive a customer login ID so that you can manage and edit information pertaining to your domain name at the GoDaddy.com website.

3. Next you will proceed to the "Domain Settings" section where you register your domain for 1 year or multiple years. Some people renew their domains every year, but you can opt to register for multiple years to save time and lock in a low rate.

You can host your website with GoDaddy.com or through another website hosting company. It can be easier to get your domain name and hosting from one provider, but if you are using a different hosting company, you can provide this information to them in the "Domain Settings" step. This enables to point your domain name to the location of your website.

If you decide to host your website with GoDaddy.com, you can make that selection in Step 5 of this process.

4. In the next step, you'll choose your privacy and domain protection settings. The basic idea of this step is to allow you to keep your personal information (to whom the domain is registered) private.

5. Lastly, you'll activate your domain name. In this step, you have the option to add email addresses, website hosting, shopping cart, secure encryption and more. Note: By choosing additional services from GoDaddy, they will often give you a lower price on your domain name.
