In most cases, businesses are required to obtain a business license. This applies whether you run a
traditional business or a home-based business.
There is not a license specific to home based businesses. The business license is the same as you would get
if your business was not run from home.
Business license requirements vary by city, county and state, so the best place to start is at your local
city hall. They can tell you which licenses and permits you need for your particular business, and how to apply
for them.
You may also be able to find this information online at your city's website under "license and permits". In
some cases, you may be able to download license application forms and complete them at home.
In addition, you will need to register your business name, often called a fictitious business name or DBA if
you are not using your personal name for your business name. You register your business name at the county
clerks office, and actually you will need to do this before you apply for your business license.
Once you register your business name or DBA, you usually don't need to renew it for several years. However,
a business license needs to be renewed annually, at which time you pay the renewal fee, which again varies by
your city and state.
