Business Card Design: Create Professional Business Cards at Home

If you are thinking about making your own business cards, you may be thinking, "How do I design them so that they look professional?"

With today's business card templates and software programs, you really don't have to have any design skills, knowledge or experience because the programs do the work for you.

However, there are some key points to remember that can help you professionalize your cards.

Choose quality paper. Generally, if you having them printed by a printing company, the paper they offer specifically for business cards should be just fine. However, if you print them yourself, make sure that you invest in some heavier stock so you don't end up with flimsy cheap-looking business cards.

Keep the card design clean-looking, with uniform font throughout and enough white space (space without text) so that the text is easy to read. You don't want a complicated business card that appears cluttered.

If you want to include graphics, use images that define your business. If they don't add significant value to the card, don't use them. Don't add graphics simply because they look pretty. If you use a photo of yourself, many times additional images don't work - simply use the portrait along with the business card text, and that's it.

Include as much contact information as possible and applicable. Besides the traditional name, title, address and phone number details included on a business card, there are a few other information items you should consider. If you have a website, include your website address. List your email address as well. You may want to add your cell phone number if it is easier for customers to reach you by cell phone.
